Of course, not all words to the left of a preposition are unnecessary, but by looking to the left of that, which, of, and to, you'll find it easy to knock out needless phrases like note that and you'll need to.

You can also find useless phrases near words like area, aspect, case, consideration, degree, factor, and situation. In these cases,1 you might need to do more rewriting than just removing the unneeded words, but it's worth it. Another place to look: near there is and there are. Instead of There are people who already write well, you can knock out a there are and an adverb and say Some people write well.
One final bonus tip: look for adverb phrases, which act like adverbs. A phrase like in general doesn't contain an adverb, but means the same thing as the adverb generally. Whenever you can get rid of an adverb phrase without losing important meaning, you should do it.
